Alright Pios, we’re going to go waaaaaay back– be prepared to feel a rush of euphoria and nostalgia because I’m about to hit you with throwback breakup songs. The songs that made you cry because the lyrics were so real and relatable, the songs that made you basically reevaluate your life. I’m talking about early 2000s, none of that Drake or Bryson Tiller simp stuff, more like Musiq Soulchild and Ne-Yo. Throughout your childhood and early teen years, you’ve probably heard at least one song in this list. And if not, then it’s never to late to start!

The first song that literally defines old breakup songs would have to be the “Potential Breakup Song” by Ally and AJ. Everyone and they momma knows about this catchy anthem, like you don’t even have to try to remember this song– the lyrics just come naturally. Do I have to say anymore? This is the throwback breakup song, it’s even in the title.

The second song would definitely have to be “So Sick” by Ne-Yo. A quick shoutout to all the males who have been through a bad breakup, you guys probably listened to this song at one point during your simp session. It’s basically a guy who struggles to move on from the ex-girlfriend because he still deeply loves her and is constantly reminded of her. In my opinion, old school Ne-Yo was the best!

Alright guys, this song basically sums up my childhood, it’s “I Want You Back” by N’Sync. If you didn’t already know, it’s about wanting your significant other back after a bad breakup. This amazing song has the whole package, broken hearts, a catchy tune, the coolest dance moves, and the hottest boy band. I can’t say enough about this song. It might be an older throwback, but one that will definitely continue to be that ice breaker at the karaoke party! 😉

Another throwback song that can really make someone ugly cry is– get ready for it– Leona Lewis’ “Bleeding Love.” Oh my gosh, the lyrics, her voice, everything about this song is perfect and it really hits the feels. It’s about a woman who continues to stay with man that broke her heart, despite what all her friends say about her. Not necessarily a breakup song, however, it’s one song that can be extremely relatable and is emotionally powerful.

The next song that comes to mind is “How Do I Breathe” by Mario. It’s about a guy who wants his girlfriend back after they breakup and he finally realizes what she truly means to him. He literally can’t live without her and that’s a bold statement. It’s a beautiful song and might make you cry to sleep. I also want to quickly mention another song by Mario, “Let Me Love You.” This isn’t a breakup song but it’s another huge throwback and I know you know the lyrics.

The next breakup song belongs to Boys II Men’s “End of the Road.” This song is another major hit that everyone and their mom and their mom’s mom knows. It’s basically about a guy who wants to keep loving and continue his relationship with his significant other, even if they’ve seem to already reach the end. It’s a true love song that will break some hearts and definitely shed some tears.

Another oldie but a goodie is Jesse McCartney’s “Leavin’,” this one is definitely and easily one of my favorite breakup songs. It talks about a guy wanting a girl who is taken to leave and break up with her current boyfriend so that they can finally be together. It’s not a sad song whatsoever– it’s catchy and has a good beat plus, it’s good to hear something that won’t make you ball your eyes out!

That about wraps up my Old Breakup Songs list– of course, there are so so many others that are just as good, but these songs were the ones that had a major impact on my childhood. If you have any throwback breakup songs, free feel to leave it in a comment down below! I’d love to see what you guys listened to back in the day! 🙂
